WTTV CBS4 Teams Up with Ball State University to Help Increase Social Media Audience

College Students Gain Experience Out of the Classroom by Creating Branding Strategies for Social Media

May 2, 2019 Indianapolis, Indiana — When CBS4 (WTTV-TV, Tribune Media) launched its new brand “Your News. Now.” on April 22nd, the station’s promotions department wasn’t the only group brainstorming ways to market that change. A telecommunications class at Ball State University was also busy strategizing ideas to increase the social media traffic to CBS4’s social media platforms and website.

Students analyzed competitors and looked for opportunities to incorporate “Your News. Now.” to create engaging content that would grow traffic to the CBS4 social platforms. On April 23rd and 25th, five groups each presented four different promotional ideas to Katie Warthan, the Promotions Manager for CBS4.

“We are always looking for ways to attract a younger audience and gain insight into how they consume media. This exercise provides CBS4 with a valuable tool in expanding our marketing plans,” commented Bob St. Charles, Creative Services Director for CBS4. “It’s really eye opening to get an outside look at your brand from students who have grown up using social media and really understand its ever-changing landscape.”

“Working with CBS4 helps students understand how to use social media productively, interpret audience and ratings data, and gain insight about new tools and platforms,” said Karen Han, Assistant Professor for the Department of Telecommunications at Ball State University. “Students always love working with a real-world client such CBS4 since they can learn hands-on skills that will hopefully lead to a career in promotions within the media industry.”
