13 Jan WGN Radio and Northwestern University Agree to Three-Year Broadcast Extension
Northwestern University and WGN Radio AM 720 today announced a three-year broadcast rightsholder extension. The agreement will keep Wildcats football and men’s basketball on the 50,000-watt radio powerhouse through the conclusion of the 2015-16 season.
WGN Radio has been the flagship station for Chicago’s Big Ten Team since 1996 and its 50,000-watt signal reaches 38 states and Canada, with live Internet streaming available worldwide on all devices through wgnradio.com, TuneIn, iHeartRadio.com, and smartphone applications.
“The Northwestern Athletics brand has experienced substantial growth over the past several years due in part to the massive reach and presence of WGN Radio,” said Vice-President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. “We’ve been extremely proud to call the station home for 17 years, and to have a wonderful partner in telling the stories of our world-class student-athletes.”
Dave Eanet serves as the voice of the Wildcats on WGN Radio, with analyst Ted Albrecht on football broadcasts, and former ’Cats Tim Doyle and Jitim Young during basketball season. Head Coaches Pat Fitzgerald and Bill Carmody, as well as Northwestern student-athletes make frequent appearances on the station’s different programs.
“WGN Radio is proud of the association with Chicago’s Big Ten team” said Jeff Hill, GSM/Interim General Manager of WGN Radio. “We are thrilled to continue to bring the excitement of Northwestern University athletics to our listeners.”
The Wildcats welcome the Iowa Hawkeyes to Welsh-Ryan Arena tonight, and will host the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday, Jan. 20.
