30 Jan Wagering on the Big Game Expected To Eclipse $150 Million for the First Time
Increasing popularity of football betting has Nevada sportsbooks on pace to shatter last year’s $133 million handle; Covers sees record traffic and offers new insights across game activities
January 30, 2017 – The pro football championship game is the single biggest betting day on the sports calendar, and the mainstream appeal of betting on the Big Game has shattered wagering records in Nevada in recent years, and on pace to set another all-time high on February 5. Data analysts at Covers, the industry’s foremost experts on sports betting information, expect the pro football championship handle to grow by another 13 percent in 2017, reaching $150 million in Nevada for the first time.
These projections underscore the increasing popularity of sports gaming not just in Nevada but around the globe where fans are tying more of their discretionary income to their passion and interests.
Football fans wagered a record $132.5 million on the pro football championship at Nevada sportsbooks last year. That handle easily eclipsed the previous high of $119.4 million wagered on the 48th installment of the championship and was a major jump from the $115.9 million bet on the 49th Big Game.
Sportsbooks in the Silver State are optimistic that this year’s championship game between Atlanta and New England will yet again be the largest handle ever, and Covers’ data validates that optimism. Covers has enjoyed year-over-year user growth of 20 percent within its free-to-play platform, Covers Contests, with over a quarter of a million active participants in those contests in 2016.
“Sports gaming has never been more mainstream as a great way to get even more involved with your favorite sports and have some fun. We’ve had 5.1 million new sports bettors visit Covers in the last three months alone,” says Covers senior managing editor Jason Logan. “We see that growth in the popularity of our free contests and the diverse range of participants. We just had a 50-year-old retired school teacher from Wisconsin beat more than 7,000 others, including her husband, to win one of our top contests.”
“Our Covers Consensus, which calculates the popular pick to cover the spread in games like the championship, had more than 15 million new sports enthusiasts utilize that data to make informed picks in the past year. That’s 15 million bettors that weren’t gaming before. That passionate engagement is why sports betting is expanding like it is,” says Logan. As oddsmakers respond to this growing popularity and wagering options increase dramatically, Covers expands its analysis, stats and services to provide information for every bet on the board. Last year, Las Vegas sportsbooks posted nearly 400 different ways to bet the Big Game, from the coin flip to which player will score the first touchdown to who will win game MVP.
Covers analysts now offer the broadest insights in the industry from team stats to prop bets.
