Winning schools receive $10K for school supplies
October 2, 2017– Each year, school teachers in the US spend an average of $500 outofpocket on classroom supplies (Forbes.) PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, is pleased to announce FUEL MY SCHOOL, a station initiative to help public school students “fuel their school” will be returning for a second year. Through an essay contest, PIX11 will again make a financial donation to help an elementary school; a middle school and a high school achieve their academic goals through upgraded classroom supplies. This year, PIX11 has doubled the prize amount, $10K for the winning school and $1K for the runner-up in each category.
Beginning October 3rd, elementary, middle school and high school students, teachers and parents from public schools in the 5 boros of New York City, Westchester County, Long Island and all of New Jersey are invited to submit an essay explaining how their school makes a difference. PIX11 will announce the winning school LIVE on the PIX11 Morning News and present the principal at each winning school with a $10,000 check to be used on school supplies or technology – the items they cannot afford and feel would make a difference in the lives of their students.
“Last year, PIX11’s FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative received nearly 600 school submissions, and over the course of the contest, nearly 16,000 votes were received. PIX11 is proud to continue the FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative to help fund school classrooms in our communities,” said Chris Wayland, SVP and GM of PIX11.
FUEL MY SCHOOL submission dates: October 3, 2017 5 a.m. – October 16, 2017 11:59 p.m.
Judging will happen in three rounds:
- Vote for the winning elementary school via text message: October 27 – October 31.
- Winning elementary school announced LIVE on PIX11 Morning News: November 2.
- Vote for the winning middle school via text message: November 3 — November 7.
- Winning middle school announced LIVE on PIX11 Morning News: November 9.
- Vote for the winning high school online via text message: November 10 – November 14.
- Winning high school announced LIVE on PIX11 Morning News: November 16.
Contest is open to public schools in the 5 boros of New York City, Westchester County, Long Island and all of New Jersey. Charter, private and parochial schools are not eligible.
Last year, Brooklyn Gardens Elementary was voted as the winning elementary school, with P.S. 78 in Staten Island named runner-up. I.S. 61 in Staten Island was voted the winning middle school and I.S. 229 in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn was the runner-up. In the High School division, Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, Queens was voted winning high school and the runner-up school was Bronx Envision Academy.
