08 Jun PIX11 News Wins 2 New York State Associated Press Awards
Station Honored for Best News Series and Best Sports Coverage
June 8, 2017 —PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, was recognized with two 1st place awards and two 2nd place awards from the New York State Associated Press Association. The NY AP awards were presented June 3 at the organization’s annual dinner in Saratoga Springs.
PIX11 was awarded 1st Place in the News Series and Sports Coverage categories for “The Final Fight,” an exclusive series that focused on boxing’s first black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, and the fight in Washington D.C. to have his wrongful conviction overturned through a posthumous presidential pardon.
PIX11 News reporters Mario Diaz, Jay Dow and James Ford along with a small team of editors came together in a unique collaboration to effectively tell this story of a historic boxing champion still down for the count.
PIX11 was also awarded 2nd place in the Enterprise Reporting and Investigative Reporting categories for “No Place to Call Home: Homeless Hotels.”
For this series on New York City’s homeless crisis, PIX11 News reporters Jay Dow and Mario Diaz confirmed that NYC’s homeless are being warehoused; official spending for temporary homeless shelters is being exploited — and nobody in charge was doing much about it. The overall series has prompted change by the New York City Department of Homeless Services in the way DHS cares for homeless families.
